Regional economic immigration programs, including the Provincial Nominee Program (PNP), are key to Canada’s economic growth, stability, and cultural diversity. Minister Marc Miller announced that Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has approved Manitoba’s request to extend temporary resident status for 6,700 potential nominees with expiring work permits in 2024. These individuals, primarily post- graduation work permit holders in the Skilled Worker PNP pool, are filling essential
job vacancies and contributing to Manitoba’s economy. This
measure allows them to continue working while their applications for permanent residence are processed.
The temporary status extension aims to transition skilled workers to permanent residents within two years. IRCC plans to explore similar initiatives with other provinces to address labor market needs and reduce the number of temporary residents. Immigration is vital to Canada’s labor force and population growth, with the PNP representing nearly 40% of economic admissions in 2023. In Manitoba alone, over 10,000 individuals transitioned from worker status to permanent residence in 2023.
